GROUNDHOGS ALL
Of Which Shadow Are You Most Afraid?

Everyone knows the saying about the month of March, “In like a lion and out like a lamb.” It suddenly came to me that February could have a unique signature all its own as well. “In like a groundhog and out like a happy, drunken, oversexed, gluttonous human.” Well, it could at least be true of anyone that has ever done Mardi Gras in New Orleans or Carnival in Brazil.

With that poor but original segue out of the way, it is important to realize that humans often face many “groundhog days” in their own consciousness evolution. By this I mean that when a human is faced with an opportunity to “come out of” him/herself and rush into a “springtime׆ of new personal growth, a choice must be made to embrace that opportunity or to cower back under our own shadow to face more of the same, frozen in a spiritual “winter” of sorts.

To be an unlearner, one must accept the challenges that the brightness of your own being demands. Despite the blurred vision at first, you will come to realize that the world you are now running around in is much more preferable to the once-cozy but now-confining hole you formerly called “home”. The choice to expand your awareness can come in many forms, but the following ones encompass the pivotal fulcrums necessary to embrace greater freedom, creativity, abundance, health and human purpose.

Beyond the Body: There is no “what came first…the chicken or the egg?” riddle here. Unlearners know that they are more than their physical body, more than a cosmic accident, and that their consciousness is more than an evolutionary quirk of misfiring synapses and dendrites. This knowledge is crucial if one is to conquer the bigger fears that risk our bodily existence. Fear of physical death has been more than enough to hold the bulk of consciousness progress down for millennia.

Beyond Religion: No matter how sweet the sentiments may sound or how wise their teachings may seem, all of the modern religions, and many of the ancient ones, too, exist to siphon power from the individual. The fact that people have demonstrated liberation in their beloved religions (saints, shamans, mystics or bodhisattvas) is more a tribute to the power of human consciousness than any prescriptions for salvation or enlightenment. As researchers have pointed out, any human being is capable of having a breakthrough or peak experience at any time. Unfortunately, most of us translate these experiences in the language of our religious belief systems, which do poor justice to the wonders of multidimensional beingness.

Beyond Sex: The recent hullabaloo going on over gay marriages in the United States continues to show the iron bars of prison consciousness on this planet. Understanding oneself as pure spirit means that one is free to create a sexuality guided by spirit rather than cultural norms or biological drives. Whether you express this manifestive energy as a heterosexual, bisexual, transsexual or homosexual is of no real concern to the unlearned. Spirit will do what it must!

Beyond Politics: Politics is a game of power confined within a certain power structure, regardless of whatever political ideologies are out there. Within that structure, all things are permitted. Diametrically opposed ideologies will even work together to keep players within bounds, for the top of the power structure creates and manages all views within it. Unlearners have seen this game for what it is, take great fancy in observing it, but ultimately are destined to leave it for other realms more fitting of their level of consciousness, whether on this planet or elsewhere.

Beyond Country/Race/Ethnicity: Being proud because one's body was born in a particular geographic location is not of unlearned sense. Your consciousness uses a body as a tool for certain experiences, of which you are more privy to than anyone else. If one is to be proud of anything, be proud of your desire and ability to transcend this trap. After all, you did nothing to get into the body. Transcending its programming, however, is quite an accomplishment! Use “your” body and "your" culture to your delight, as a context to frame an experience.

Beyond Money: The unlearned mind recognizes that money is a tool of control and a poor motivation for one's chosen work. Money is accepted as part of the present cycle of earth-life experience, but higher motivations spur creativity in non-survival based cultures of empowered consciousness.

Beyond Human: While alien life forms may indeed mingle amongst us on this planet, the more-than-human condition I am describing goes further than the acceptance of intelligent non-human life-forms. Just “ahead” of your perception is a being so powerful that, if you truly understood it, as unlearners are determined to do, you would relax into the experience that is your life and flow with it more gracefully. That being is none other than YOU, an all-powerful (in our earth-bound understanding of that term) being who is manifesting as you in many forms for many reasons, some of which are beyond your present understanding. You were not human once, and will be so again. Yet the experiences you are having here in third density will forever change you and enrich you.

Do not be ashamed if any of these great barriers to self-understanding are currently beyond your means to hurdle. Each of us has our own pace and passion that must be followed above all others' expectations or desires. A friend once advised me, “Wisdom is gained through the Fool's folly.” Or as the great unlearner Anthony DeMello used to quip, “I'm an ass and you're an ass!” Less afraid of your shadow now?
